THE BILUPA FAMILY

Guardians of Ladakh’s Mystical Heritage

The Bilupa family of Chushot, led by Mr. Phuntsog Tundup, Mrs. Skarma Dolma, and their sons Mr. Dorjay Namgyal and Mr. Stanzin Phuntsog, carries a deep connection to Ladakh’s spiritual, cultural, and tourism legacy. Renowned as stalwarts of Ladakh’s tourism industry, they have dedicated their lives to preserving and sharing the region’s rich traditions, pristine landscapes, and immersive experiences through Bilupa Mountain Lodge.

The Mystical Origins of ‘Bilupa’

The name Bilupa is derived from the mystical dwarf-like beings believed to exist in a parallel world—a concept deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism and Ladakhi folklore. These enigmatic entities are said to inhabit hidden realms, occasionally crossing paths with humans, bestowing wisdom, fortune, and protection upon those who respect nature and spiritual harmony. This belief is particularly strong in Chushot, where stories of Bilupas have been passed down for generations, intertwining with the village’s history and traditions.

The Bilupa Family: A Blessed Lineage in Ladakh – Birth House of Thiksey Rinpoche

The Bilupa family of Chushot holds a deeply spiritual and historic significance, not just in Ladakh but in the wider realm of Tibetan Buddhism. Their lineage has been uniquely blessed with the birth of the 11th Thiksey Rinpoche, the reincarnation of Stog Changsem Sherab Zangpo, who now heads Thiksey Monastery and leads the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism.

A Rare and Sacred Blessing

The birth of a reincarnated master within a family is considered a once-in-a-million-years blessing, a divine event believed to bring wisdom, prosperity, and spiritual fortune to all associated with them. For the Bilupa family, this honor reaffirms their deep-rooted connection to Ladakh’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

A Legacy of Devotion and Leadership

With such a sacred presence in their family, the Bilupa lineage continues to be a pillar of Ladakh’s cultural, spiritual, and tourism legacy. Their Bilupa Mountain Lodge is more than a retreat—it stands as a place of learning, introspection, and cultural immersion, where travelers can connect with the ancient wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism while experiencing the profound beauty of Ladak
